Telecommunications

The Telecommunications Division is responsible for providing management, services and support for the City's core communications infrastructures which includes the areas of voice, CATV, LAN/WAN/VLAN, cable interconnect (metallic, fiber & wireless based), cellular, paging, and wireless services on a citywide basis. The Division is comprised of five distinct sections:

  • The Administration Section provides overall day-to-day office, payroll and personnel support for all division sections and is the main interface point for the public at large for interfacing with all divisional sections.

  • The Cable Broadcast Section provides government information programming for the City's Government Access Cable Channel (GTC-3) to cable companies operating within the City's geographical boundaries. The section also contacts with independent agencies to provide programming services for the Educational and Public Access cable channels as well as provides assistance to City agencies with non-broadcast video production projects.

  • The Interconnect Section is responsible for cable casting all material produced or secured by the Cable Broadcast Section to local CATV operators, operation and maintenance of the CATV head-end facility, CATV engineering and distribution within all City-owned facilities, operation and maintenance of over 100 miles of fiber optic and outside coaxial cable, and engineering and project management of fiber optic and telecommunication wiring projects for all City facilities.

  • The Telephone Services Section is responsible for providing and coordinating on a citywide basis all telephone, cellular , paging and specialized communication services. Acquisition, implementation, maintenance and management functions are also provided for these services and systems as well as overall contract management control for all City Departments. The group also manages revenue generating services related to telecommunication services such as usage commissions on local and long distance payphone services, cable company franchise fees and citizen requested video tape duplications.

  • The MetroNet Services Section is responsible for the citywide fiber based Wide Area Network (WAN), as well as all City related Local Area networks (LAN) and Virtual Private Networks (VLAN). Planning, engineering, installation, operation, control, monitoring and maintenance functions are provided to all City Departments as well as all outside agencies associated with City of Columbus. The group also provides single-point-of-contact (SPOC), management and control functions for all vendors related to data distribution and connectivity materials and services.
